Saving an eroding cliffside with coconut coir terracing, hundreds of native plants, and many hours of labor

Done alongside Shady Mountain, Dicot Land Studio, and many others over the course of several years

Charlotte, Vermont

Shown is the northern 1/3 section of the ~50 foot high cliff we transformed. Coconut fiber coir logs/matting and an annual native seed mix provide short-term erosion control and terraces for planting. The establishment of new native root systems in years to come will provide long-term stability as well as habitat.

Residential stone walkway in shale/slate

South Burlington, Vermont

Replacing an old brick walkway dilapidated by root heave. By carefully root pruning a nearby maple and laying a generous base of crushed stone, this Blu-60 walkway will remain level and drain stormwater away from the home’s foundation for years to come.

Drystack woodland retaining wall at Saint’s Rest with native stone

Vergennes, Vermont

A hefty drystone wall tucked between a gorgeous outcropping and an unsightly utility pole. All of the stone was unearthed during site prep on other parts of the property. The wall compliments a subtle scattering of native perennials in this woodland “garden” space.

Ongoing stonework at Saint’s Rest

Bordering huge beds of native perennials and trees designed by Dicot Land Studio

Vergennes, Vermont

Some hardscape touches after a massive planting effort designed by Dicot Land Studio and installed by Dicot, Broadleaf, and Faber LD. This bluestone “landing pad” and cobble-bordered walkway provide accessibility and flow to a historic lakeside property.

Mini Creta retaining wall before and after

Winooski, Vermont

A seemingly simple transformation, yet a punishing amount of labor. The goal with this install was to make mowing easier and improve the aesthetics of the front of the house. Both were achieved and the client was happy.

Mid and late summer colors of an urban planting

Downtown Burlington, Vermont

September

Hydrangea and Russian Sage were planted to compliment the pre-existing Spirea, followed by a mix of mostly native perennials to fill out the space and support pollinators. Great results in this dry, full-sun urban location.

Stone swale & drainage basin / native rain garden

South Burlington, Vermont

Downslope waterflow was eroding a planting bed, exposing the roots of a mature maple, and compromising a stone retaining wall. This 30-foot swale now diverts stormwater to a rain garden consisting of swamp milkweed, baptisia and blue flag iris, among others.

Mixed native & ornamental garden with drystacked field stone and solid belgian block retaining walls

South Burlington, Vermont

This residential garden was built up with new soil, compost, and two types of stone retainers. A diverse grouping of perennials and spring bulbs brings the space to life.

Thuja occidentalis (Eastern White Cedar/Arborvitae) hedges with automated drip irrigation

Burlington, Vermont

Two classic evergreen screens with little to no maintenance required by the client. The trees took well to this dry and windy location on Lake Champlain.

Native pollinator rock garden memorial in Holy Cross Cematary

St. Albans, Vermont

A two-tier bed built around a flag pole. This 10 foot wide monument displays a beautiful engraved granite plaque tucked among native, pollinator-friendly perennials.
